Song background:

This piece I arranged as part of my ward's annual Easter music program. I wanted to have a piece of music that more accurately depicted Christ being crucified on the cross. When I imagine Christ's suffering on the cross, I think that He must have been completely exhausted and drained from the many hours of uncomprehensable pain. This pain creates a certain overwhelming numbness that mirrors the umcomprehensability in my eyes.

In finding music and musical styles that matched this emotion, I was drawn to 20th and 21st century minimalism, specifically works by Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, and Max Richter. The main inspiration for this piece comes from Glass' Metamorphosis. I pray that as you perform this piece that you can listen to how the repetition and phrasing highlights the text in a perhaps more somber light than is traditionally sung.
