Song background:

This was one of the first Christmas songs that I wrote as a young mom of three. We lived in a tiny little 100+ year old house and I would sing and play the piano while my babies went to sleep. This was inspired by Mary, mother of our Saviour, and a lullaby I imagined she could have sung.

Lyrics: Once upon a midnight clear
Mary rocked her baby fair,
And she sang this sweet refrain
To the Lord who soon would reign:

"Hush little baby, my sweet little baby,
Your mother will sing you a lullaby.
Angels are watching you keeping you safe.
Sweet little baby, sleep."

The stars up in the sky so bright
Lent to earth their heav'nly light.
O'er the plains the song did ring
To the newborn infant King:

"Hush little baby, my sweet little baby,
Your mother will sing you a lullaby.
Angels are watching you keeping you safe.
Sweet little baby, sleep."

Across the sea the Nephites saw the star
And as they stood in awe
The message rang from heaven above
To testify the Lord's pure love:

Hush little baby, my sweet little baby
Your mother will sing you a lullaby.
Angels are watching you keeping you safe.
Sweet little baby, sleep.

DESCANT:
Hush-a-by, little baby, sleep, little babe,
I'll sing a lullaby.
Angels watch you and keep you safe.
Sleep, my baby, sleep.
