Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs

Original anthem by Fen Frehner for SATB and piano or organ

Set to Isaiah 53:4-6 scriptures made famous in Handel’s “Messiah”

Background

While reading Isaiah 53:4, which was one text emphasized in Handel’s “Messiah”, I started thinking about whether that text could be utilized in a more praising, thankful, honoring way rather than a dark, sad treatment – and this song is what came of that.  Aside from the reflective middle section covering Isaiah 53:5-6, the main Isaiah 53:4 text is presented as appreciatory and honoring.  You might even notice a dignified “ceremonial” feel to the song.  There are many types of ceremonies and processions – graduation, wedding, funeral, awards, military-success, religious, or otherwise honoring a day, event, or person for what they have done or will be doing.  This seemed fitting for what He has done for us.

Lyrics

53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
